About Us

The Alberta Main Street Program is a lottery-funded heritage preservation initiative that provides financial and technical resources to Alberta municipalities toward the conservation of significant collections of historic commercial buildings in main street areas across the province.

A program of the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation and Alberta Community Development's Heritage Resource Management Branch, it offers communities a comprehensive strategy to strengthen the historic architectural character and economic vitality of the main street area and, in doing so, to contribute to overall community development. The program’s highly successful approach combines professional architectural expertise and building conservation grants with a wide range of strategies and resources in organization, marketing and economic development.

Since its inception in 1987, the Alberta Main Street Program has assisted the revitalization of twenty-three historic main street areas across the province. The program is integrated into Alberta’s Municipal Heritage Partnership Program, which helps municipalities identify, protect and preserve local historic places and participate in Canada’s Historic Places Initiative.
