Program Objectives

The Alberta Historical Resources Foundation encourages, promotes, and assists with community-based initiatives that preserve and interpret Alberta’s rich heritage. As a Foundation program, Alberta Main Street helps small towns and cities preserve and enhance heritage resources within historic downtown areas and, at the same time, helps these communities to improve their financial viability, vitality, and sense of community.

The program’s vision is to establish a living legacy that identifies, preserves and interprets the historic fabric and spirit of main street Alberta. Our mission is to provide a flexible, community-driven process that preserves the heritage value of historic main street areas and encourages vibrant sustainable communities through partnerships, advice, coordination, guidance and resources. In keeping with both of these, our objectives are:

  1. To assist in the rehabilitation and ongoing preservation of Alberta’s heritage buildings and historic main streets
  2. To aid in the coordination and orderly development of these areas to enhance their heritage value
  3. To improve public appreciation and understanding of the historic interest evident in such areas
  4. To promote the commercial revitalization of the main street area
